Murphy beds vs wall beds vs hide-a-beds — what's the difference?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there are some distinctions worth knowing. A murphy bed is named after the original fold-down bed design and typically refers to a bed that stores vertically in a cabinet or wall unit. A wall bed is a broader term for any bed that mounts to or folds into a wall structure. A hide-a-bed sometimes refers to a sofa bed (a couch with a fold-out mattress inside), though in New Zealand the term is commonly applied to vertical fold-down designs as well. Mazon's hideabed range includes vertical fold-down beds that store neatly in a timber cabinet — available online and shipped within 1–2 business days.
Is a murphy bed right for your space?
Murphy beds work well in apartments, sleepouts, rental properties, home offices and spare rooms where a permanent bed would take up too much floor space. Standard murphy beds require a ceiling height of approximately 2.2–2.4m and enough clear floor space to fold down fully. Our team can advise on sizing and installation requirements — contact us before ordering if you're unsure whether your space is suitable.
